Present a Luncheon Program
Procurement in Latin America: Trends and Recent Developments
Government procurement typically comprises at least a quarter of a nation's annual budget in Latin America and intersects with a variety of issues relevant to international trade and development, corruption, international arbitration, and inter-American politics. Nevertheless, government procurement is often overlooked as an area of serious study by practitioners and academics. From the investor perspective, it is clear that inefficiencies in Latin American procurement systems have prevented foreign investment into the core needs of Latin American states. From an international development perspective, the lack of foreign participation in Latin American procurement and the misuse of already available government funds have inhibited the economic growth of Latin American states. To improve the functioning of procurement systems in Latin America, practitioners and academics in both the United States and Latin America need to share ideas as to what has and has not worked. This event will focus on the major issues confronting the procurement regimes in Latin America and seek to identify avenues for positive reform.
